Supports Systems Limited was awarded the contract for the training of INEC personnel on Advanced GIS analysis. This is
preparatory to the use of GIS in enhancing the operations of INEC for 2011 elections.

The Training was declared open by the Director of ICT, Engr. E. T Akim who told the participants to brace up for the
challenges ahead in geographical information systems.

Support Systems Limited has successfully completed the consultancy service in a World Bank assisted project for the National Bureau of Statistics under the Presidency. SSL by this project has succeeded in institutionalizing GIS and GPS technology at the NBS. The Project entailed a complete review of the methods of data capture, processing and analysis; identifying associated problems with GIS implementation and training.


The main task involved: An assessment of the data and operation process of the National Bureau of Statistics; a detailed examination of the sources and characteristics of data in Nigeria; and a demonstration of GIS capability in improving data collection, storage and analysis procedures.


Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System Infrastructure such as licenses of Arcview 9.2 and Geostatisical Analyst extensions as well as GPS units were also provided for the bureau.


To ensure adequate human capacity, SSL also trained NBS staff on the use of GPS & GIS systems. The following key services were covered by the NBS GIS and GPS implementation project:

The Colortrac SmartLF Gx+ 42 wide format scanners

The award-winning SmartLF Gx+ 42 (T42 Thick Media option) is a high performance CCD-based color scanner designed for the reprographics, graphic arts, photographic, corporate graphics, GIS and the top-end AEC markets. The forerunner to the enhanced current SmartLF Gx+ series, the SmartLF Gx 42, is the recipient of Wide-Format Imaging Reader's Choice Top Products Award 2009.

The Colortrac SmartLF Ci 40

The SmartLF Ci 40 wide format scanner is an affordable, CIS-based 40 inch large format technical document scanner which has a unique
front-feed, front exit paper path. It is an ENERGY STAR qualified
scanner offering high quality imaging performance, Ethernet 1000
connectivity and instant-on LED long life illumination for low cost of
operation and maintenance.

The unique document feed system of the SmartLF Ci 40 offers fast and reliable technical document scanning at 600dpi optical resolution and can be operated in confined workspaces where other large scanners cannot be placed. Supports Systems Limited, as Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) reseller in Nigeria has been mandated by ESRI and SAMBUS, the West African distributor of ESRI products, to donate the ArcGIS Server and 4 concurrent ArcView licenses to the Department of Petroleum Resources, Nigeria.

The donation is a part of the ongoing efforts of ESRI to increase awareness on the effectiveness of Geographical Information Systems solution and the ArcGIS software in Sub-Saharan Africa.

 
The 13th Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Biennial International Conference on the Oil and Gas Industry in Nigeria, organised by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and some Operators in the oil and gas industry was held at the prestigious Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja between November 3 – 5, 2008.

 The Conference, with theme: “Promoting HSE Best Practices in a Challenging Environment”, is the largest gathering of HSE professionals in Nigeria and this year’s edition was attended by all the major operators in the oil and gas industry.

 

Support Systems Limited used the conference as a launch pad for her unique integrated HSE MS software, OMNISAFE. To grace the occasion was Mr. Shane Butt, Vice-president, Research and Development, Omniware Pty Ltd, Australia, the producers of OMNISAFE HSE software and OMNICOM Contract and Procurement Management software. Shane along with Support Systems HSE Advisor, Muyiwa Ogunbamowo, also presented a paper titled “Compliance Made Easy with Omnisafe HSE Software”.

 Support Systems exhibition stand at the conference was a beehive of activities as many who attended the conference sought to know how Omnisafe can assist their organisation improve their HSE performance. Demonstration sessions were held to showcase the capabilities and functionalities of Omnisafe in the management of HSE.

 Shane met with key officers of DPR, the JVC, the academia and the press. Support Systems plans to extend the demonstration of Omnisafe to clients’ facilities in 2009. Companies are welcome to indicate their interest to participate.

 
Support Systems Ltd attended the 7th African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment ( AARSE) conference held in Accra, Ghana from the 24th to 30th October 2008. The AARSE conference is the biggest gathering of Remote Sensing experts and GIS users in Africa.

It was hosted by the Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services (CERSGIS) Accra, Ghana with the theme “Application of Earth Observation and Geoinformation for Governance in Africa”. Mr Foster Mensah, the Executive Director of CERSGIS was the conference Chairman.

The theme of the conference is of universal importance, and particularly relevant to Africa where the wide application of Geoinformation technologies in various fields has its potential to improve the quality of life of all residing on this continent.

 The conference was declared open by the Vice President of Ghana.

 The conference was enlightening, worthwhile and a success as a result of the excellent programme of plenary speakers, technical sessions, exhibition and social programmes put in place.

As part of her commitment to raising the awareness of professionals and developing human capacity in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) solutions, Support Systems Limited successfully organised and trained some professionals on the ESRI ArcGIS 9.x software. The ArcGIS 1 & II Training, conducted at the Support Systems ad-hoc Training Centre in Lagos, offered instructor-led courses that explain Geographical information Systems (GIS) concepts, explore GIS applications, and teach people to use ESRI GIS software and related technologies .

Adjudged by participants as an enriching session, the ArcGIS training covered topics such as:
